Episode 91: Giving the Undertaker a Run For His Money

It’s another Monday, and another week of Everlasting Minute!

In minute 91, Dodo Denney is doing yeoman’s work with facial expressions and physical acting. She really knocks it out of the park for the less than 30 seconds she’s in. She is, of course, distressed at the thought of her son being put into a taffy pulling machine…which seems like a nice way of saying “The Rack”. We also get the final Oompa Loompa song, which is also the most dramatic and menacing. We decide that Grandpa Joe is the Honey Badger of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Also, Jason points out that this movie quotes two songs that would be released over 20 years later. We also discuss another Shakesperean quote.

Episode 85: It’s Pretty, It’s So Pretty

Happy Labor Day (to our US listeners)!

In minute 85, the Oompa Loompas finish their song, and we move on to a new room. Wonka has a treat for us, because, apparently, he’s going into…motorsports? That’s weird. Anyway, we learn a few things right away about the Wonkamobile, specifically what it’s powered by. Jason and David spend some time talking about the different sodas that are used to power the Wonkamobile, specifically which ones don’t appear to be real, which ones appear to be generic names, and which ones are specific brands. We also talk about the habits of rabbits, as well as John Keats’ poem, Endymion. There are also numerous digressions in this episode.

Episode 83: Touching Wonka’s Tie

Time for a mid-week sweet treat!

In minute 83, Veruca is finishing her song. She meets her end in this minute…you’ll have to listen if you don’t know how. Mr. Salt, of course has a very specific reaction to her end. We discuss the composition and orchestration of the song. We discuss the logistics of knocking a set of boxes over in the same order for continuity’s sake. We also talk about how this set of actors comports themselves when they’re not the focus of the action. We also talk about how one falls through a trap door without hurting or embarrassing themselves.

Episode 82: The Tyrannosaurus Rex of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

It’s the beginning of a new week!

In minute 82, Veruca sings her song, and runs around causing havoc. We try and figure out what 10,000 tons of ice cream would look like. David also spends time talking about the practice of lip syncing in movie musicals. We also discuss Veruca’s list of demands. We also slide in a plug for Minute of the Apes.

Episode 67: The Tale of the Singing Fudge Maker

Welcome to your new week!

In minute 67, we are on the precipice of a new room, the Inventing Room. Wonka speaks a little German, and then lays down some ground rules before the tour starts, and we get a nice shot of most of the room and the mess that lies within. David is reminded of his past by some of the implements in the room.

Also, we play a little game based on this tweet:

We’ll see you back here on Wednesday!

Episode 62: The 2nd Most Well Known Ocean Liner Disaster

Welcome to the middle of the week!

In Minute 62, Wonka brushes off criticism of how he handled the Augustus situation, and introduces the tour group to their new form of transportation. Wonka fat shames Mr. Salt…which I suppose is only fair, since Mr. Salt did the same to Augustus. Jason has a theory about the diegesis of the Oompa Loompa song. David offers a different way of looking at the staging of the scene, and it may owe to some confusing camera work. Jason compares this issue to a similar issue during the semi chase in The Dark Knight. David wonders why Wonka names his boat after a sunken ocean liner.

Also, I found this auction listing for some Harper Goff drawings of the Wonkatania.

Episode 58: Green Wigs and Orange Makeup

Happy Monday!

Jason and David start a new week talking about minute 58. We learn more about the Oompa Loompas and Loompaland, and Mrs. Teevee is being a know it all again. David doesn’t really understand the creaming and sugaring process in the chocolate river. Mike Teevee wonders aloud if the Oompa Loompas are real…and if they’re not real, what are they? We also talk about Rusty Goffe who is the Oompa Loompa with the most credits.

Episode 57: Chocolate Covered Steak

It’s Friday!!!

Todd is with us for one last episode, as we discuss minute 57. We’ve wrapped up the joy of “Pure Imagination”, and now we turn our sights to the Chocolate Room. Specifically, the centerpiece of the room the chocolate river and waterfall. Todd has questions about the buttercup, and the sound design of the bite. Mr. Salt and Mrs. Gloop have a weird reaction to the river running through the Chocolate Room. Mr. Salt seems pretty impressed with the fact that Wonka confides in him. We discuss the recording of the dialogue in this scene, which leads to a discussion about the the possibility of another filmed remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We end the episode discussing the Oompa Loompas and comparing the version in this film to Tim Burton’s version.

Thanks to Todd for being with us one final time. You can find Todd on Minute of the Apes and The Other Kind Radio. Also, you can find his book, The Risen, at this link.
