Episode 92: Complete Lack of Responsibility 101

It’s Wednesday!

In minute 92, the Oompa Loompas finish their final song, and point out that books don’t have commercials. Wonka, Grandpa Joe and Charlie are back in their street clothes, and Wonka goes through his mail. He has already basically forgotten about the Bucket family, and is extremely nonchalant about the fates of the other kids. David discusses the issues that he has with the Oompa Loompa choreography, and how much it has made him cringe over the years. Wonka needs to get back to the Queen, and Grandpa Joe plots to kite Willy Wonka’s checks.

Episode 91: Giving the Undertaker a Run For His Money

It’s another Monday, and another week of Everlasting Minute!

In minute 91, Dodo Denney is doing yeoman’s work with facial expressions and physical acting. She really knocks it out of the park for the less than 30 seconds she’s in. She is, of course, distressed at the thought of her son being put into a taffy pulling machine…which seems like a nice way of saying “The Rack”. We also get the final Oompa Loompa song, which is also the most dramatic and menacing. We decide that Grandpa Joe is the Honey Badger of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Also, Jason points out that this movie quotes two songs that would be released over 20 years later. We also discuss another Shakesperean quote.

Episode 87: Gotta Grind Those Rails

Happy Friday!

In minute 87, bubbles, bubbles, everywhere…but not the same kind we previously saw. The WonkaMobile goes through the Hsawaknow, and comes out clean and dry through the magic of dry cleaning. Grandpa Joe lets us know about his hygiene habits, and Mike Teevee thinks that the ride was pretty pointless. We are also introduced to a new room with a camera in it. David comes up with a new system of measurement. Jason gets ahead of himself. Jason tries to use Japanese terms, but gets them confused, so we learn a few new Japanese terms. We also talk about John Joseph Merlin, who is the first known maker of roller skates, and, an inventor of clockwork robots/automatons…in the 18th century.

We’ll see you back here next week!

Episode 84: Roy Kinnear, You Left Us Too Soon…

Ready for the weekend? Well let us get you there!

In minute 84, Veruca went first, and Mr. Salt goes second. Wonka gives the Salts a “good sporting chance”(?) of not getting burned up in the furnace. David and Jason question that math. David tries to figure out why the onscreen lyrics return for this particular Oompa Loompa song. We also discuss Charlie’s return to his sweet, caring form. We also discuss Roy Kinnear’s dive into the eggdicator chute.

Also, Jason continues to think that Wonka needs sunglasses…

Definitely not…

Episode 75: Lickable Wallpaper Lifehack

Happy Friday!

We’re three quarters of the way through the movie. In minute 75, Violet and Mr. Beauregarde take their leave, and we head into a hallway with lickable wallpaper. We talk about the continued uncomfortability of Denise Nickerson’s blueberry costume. We discuss the origin of the literary quote that Willy Wonka dispenses in this minute, and the misunderstandings of childhood. We also see another example where the context of the literary quotes help us understand why it’s being used in this moment. Toward the end of the episode, David brings the episode to a screeching halt. We finish the episode by talking about the logistics of lickable wallpaper.

See you next week!

Episode 74: Wonka’s Sense of Humor

Happy Wednesday!

In Minute 74, we’re continuing to deal with Violet’s transformation. The Oompa Loompas moralize, and Mr. Beauregarde is very concerned for his daughter’s well being. We talk about this version of the Oompa Loompa song, and whether or not it’s diegetic. David breaks down the lyrics, trying to figure out what they’re getting at this time. We discuss how difficult it must have been to be Denise Nickerson for the shooting of this scene, and talk about the costume that she had to stay in for long stretches. There’s also a discussion about the gum chewing habits of our hosts.

Episode 63: People Are Kinda Gross

Happy Friday!

In minute 63, we’re talking boat rides, physics, spitting and nose picking. We talk about how the physical travel of the Wonkatania worked in terms of filming, but we also discuss how boating on chocolate would actually work. David asks a question about the nature of the Chocolate Room, and what its actual purpose is. We also talk about the drama of shooting a film with adolescents, and David catches himself being wrong…again.

Also, it has been brought to our attention that Denise Nickerson, who played Violet, has suffered a stroke. You can read the EW story here, and can donate to the family for medical care here. We here at Everlasting Minute wish her a speedy recovery, and our thoughts are with her and her family.

Episode 62: The 2nd Most Well Known Ocean Liner Disaster

Welcome to the middle of the week!

In Minute 62, Wonka brushes off criticism of how he handled the Augustus situation, and introduces the tour group to their new form of transportation. Wonka fat shames Mr. Salt…which I suppose is only fair, since Mr. Salt did the same to Augustus. Jason has a theory about the diegesis of the Oompa Loompa song. David offers a different way of looking at the staging of the scene, and it may owe to some confusing camera work. Jason compares this issue to a similar issue during the semi chase in The Dark Knight. David wonders why Wonka names his boat after a sunken ocean liner.

Also, I found this auction listing for some Harper Goff drawings of the Wonkatania.

Episode 59: 40 Takes and One Costume

It’s the fourth of July…celebrate by listening to us talk about a German boy falling into a chocolate river.

Minute 59 is where Augustus Gloop contaminates the chocolate river with his hands…and then his entire body. Also, Veruca has a weird idea of what an Oompa Loompa is, and we’re venturing into some pretty weird territory. We also learn that the production team did not seem to be prepared for shooting this scene.

Have a safe holiday!

Episode 58: Green Wigs and Orange Makeup

Happy Monday!

Jason and David start a new week talking about minute 58. We learn more about the Oompa Loompas and Loompaland, and Mrs. Teevee is being a know it all again. David doesn’t really understand the creaming and sugaring process in the chocolate river. Mike Teevee wonders aloud if the Oompa Loompas are real…and if they’re not real, what are they? We also talk about Rusty Goffe who is the Oompa Loompa with the most credits.
