Episode 88: Everything Always Comes Back to Nickelback

It’s a brand new week! Thanks for starting it with us!

In minute 88, Mike Teevee is interrupting Willy Wonka, and explains television poorly. Wonka explains how he created Wonkavision…poorly. Also, we realize how much of this scene is lost in translation with today’s television technology. Jason explains his version of 4K to David. We briefly discuss video formats, and why formats end up being adopted. Jason makes a Star Trek reference that completely goes over David’s head. Wonka gives us another literary quote, and we talk Lewis Carroll’s gifts to the literary canon.

Episode 74: Wonka’s Sense of Humor

Happy Wednesday!

In Minute 74, we’re continuing to deal with Violet’s transformation. The Oompa Loompas moralize, and Mr. Beauregarde is very concerned for his daughter’s well being. We talk about this version of the Oompa Loompa song, and whether or not it’s diegetic. David breaks down the lyrics, trying to figure out what they’re getting at this time. We discuss how difficult it must have been to be Denise Nickerson for the shooting of this scene, and talk about the costume that she had to stay in for long stretches. There’s also a discussion about the gum chewing habits of our hosts.

Episode 62: The 2nd Most Well Known Ocean Liner Disaster

Welcome to the middle of the week!

In Minute 62, Wonka brushes off criticism of how he handled the Augustus situation, and introduces the tour group to their new form of transportation. Wonka fat shames Mr. Salt…which I suppose is only fair, since Mr. Salt did the same to Augustus. Jason has a theory about the diegesis of the Oompa Loompa song. David offers a different way of looking at the staging of the scene, and it may owe to some confusing camera work. Jason compares this issue to a similar issue during the semi chase in The Dark Knight. David wonders why Wonka names his boat after a sunken ocean liner.

Also, I found this auction listing for some Harper Goff drawings of the Wonkatania.

Episode 61: Photoshop – 1971 Edition(?)

Happy Monday!

In minute 61, we get the first of the Oompa Loompa songs, as the Oompa Loompas moralize over Augustus’ weakness. There’s discussion about the potential reasoning behind the usage of onscreen lyrics during the Oompa Loompa song. We also have a discussion about whether the Oompa Loompa song is diegetic. We also go back to episode 7, and discuss the usage of William Allingham’s The Fairies in a new context.

We’ll see you back here on Wednesday!

Episode 40: How Many Spiders Are In These Slippers?

Welcome to a new week!

In Minute 40, Grandpa Joe sings “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket”, and starts to wander around the room. We try and break down exactly where Joe’s perspective is coming from in the lyrics of this song. We have a lot of problems with his selfishness (and hyperbole). Jason points out that after 20 years of non-use, Grandpa Joe’s slippers, which he demands, probably have spiders living in them.

Episode 24: Charlie’s Long Walk

It’s Friday!

We end the week continuing to discuss Mrs. Bucket’s song to try and cheer up Charlie…even though we’re pretty sure this song is non-diegetic, and he’s definitely not hearing what she’s saying. Charlie walks away from the camera, which is an interesting visual metaphor. Also, Charlie contemplates the direction of his life, as he strolls through town.
