Episode 78: High School Physics

Happy Friday!

In minute 78, Charlie and Grandpa Joe are still flying around. They fancy themselves rockets, birds, and shooting stars. David continues to have a low opinion of Grandpa Joe, and we end up blaming him for the episode getting a little off track. We go on a tangent about centripetal/centrifugal force, and talk about composite shots.

Have a great weekend!

Episode 77: Questionable Physics

It’s your midweek sweet treat!

In minute 77, we’re talking all about Fizzy Lifting Drinks. Grandpa Joe proves that he has no integrity, no sense, and no understanding of physics. David has very strong feelings about Grandpa Joe in this scene, and wastes no time talking about it. Grandpa Joe abuses Charlie’s trust in him…providing a fine example of parenting for Jason. As the title suggests, we also discuss the questionable physics in this scene.

Come back on Friday for the next minute.

Episode 76: Everlasting Minute After Dark (Parental Discretion is Advised)

It’s going to be a good Monday.

In minute 76, things get a little…adult. We continue with the lickable wallpaper, and Wonka is not pleased with Veruca when she questions him about Snozzberries. He then leads them into a room with a lot of bubbles, and Grandpa and Charlie make a very bad choice. We discuss the nature of the Snozzberry, and how the word took on a new meaning in the late 70s, thanks to Mr. Roald Dahl. We also talk about artificially flavored banana candies, a couple more literary references, and what would happen if you took candy to Dairy Queen.

Episode 75: Lickable Wallpaper Lifehack

Happy Friday!

We’re three quarters of the way through the movie. In minute 75, Violet and Mr. Beauregarde take their leave, and we head into a hallway with lickable wallpaper. We talk about the continued uncomfortability of Denise Nickerson’s blueberry costume. We discuss the origin of the literary quote that Willy Wonka dispenses in this minute, and the misunderstandings of childhood. We also see another example where the context of the literary quotes help us understand why it’s being used in this moment. Toward the end of the episode, David brings the episode to a screeching halt. We finish the episode by talking about the logistics of lickable wallpaper.

See you next week!

Episode 74: Wonka’s Sense of Humor

Happy Wednesday!

In Minute 74, we’re continuing to deal with Violet’s transformation. The Oompa Loompas moralize, and Mr. Beauregarde is very concerned for his daughter’s well being. We talk about this version of the Oompa Loompa song, and whether or not it’s diegetic. David breaks down the lyrics, trying to figure out what they’re getting at this time. We discuss how difficult it must have been to be Denise Nickerson for the shooting of this scene, and talk about the costume that she had to stay in for long stretches. There’s also a discussion about the gum chewing habits of our hosts.

Episode 73: Was The Gum Real?

It’s a brand new week!

In minute 73, Violet is chewing away at a piece of gum, and it has extremely unintended results. We talk about the rather blase attitudes of several members of the tour. We also talk about the very quick change in Mr. Beauregarde’s attitude, and the fact that he is apparently very fond of sour cream. We talk a bit about the logistics of inflating Violet’s costume, and how that may have affected the on set dialogue recording. We also discuss the possibility that a famous comedian may have gotten his stage persona from this very minute…

Episode 72: Educational Wonka

Happy Friday!

In minute 72, Wonka continues to show off his revolutionary, non-pollutionary, mechanical wonder. We see the machine doing its thing, and we get a finished product, which, since it’s gum, Violet is very into. We talk some of the behind the scenes of this machine, focusing specifically on the bees…or the “bees”. Also, Jason has a question about Gene Wilder’s voice over during the machine montage.

Thanks for listening, and we’ll see you back here on Monday.

Episode 71: Whatever Kind of Nuts

Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life…

In minute 71, we start out a bit political, but we quickly get back to the minute. This episode contains one of our favorite shots (see the screen capture above). The kids receive their Everlasting Gobstoppers and are then introduced to something very special. We talk about the act of crossing fingers. We also talk about Wonka passing over Charlie in the initial offering of the Everlasting Gobstoppers, and what exactly it might mean. Is Mr. Salt taking notes about how Wonka runs his factory? Is he taking the right notes? We also discuss the reactions to the Revolutionary Non-Pollutionary Mechanical Wonder.

Thanks for listening, and we’ll see you on Friday!
